Is there proof that MHFA actually works?

Yes, there is evidence that Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is effective in improving knowledge, attitudes, and helping behaviors related to mental health issues.

Multiple studies have shown that individuals who receive MHFA training have increased knowledge and confidence in identifying and responding to mental health issues, and are more likely to provide appropriate support and refer individuals to professional help.

For example, a systematic review and meta-analysis of 15 studies found that MHFA training significantly improved participants’ knowledge of mental health problems, confidence in providing help, and supportive behaviors towards people experiencing mental health problems.

Another study found that MHFA training resulted in a significant increase in the number of people seeking help for mental health issues, as well as increased referrals to mental health services.

Overall, while more research is needed to fully understand the long-term impact of MHFA, the evidence suggests that it can be a useful tool in promoting mental health literacy and helping individuals provide appropriate support to those in need.
