A Path to Mindful Meditation
Mala beads have a rich history, originating from ancient spiritual traditions,
and they have been used for centuries as a powerful tool in meditation practices.
History of Mala Beads: Mala beads have their roots in Hindu and Buddhist traditions, where they were initially known as “Japa malas.” The term “mala” means “garland” in Sanskrit, symbolising a string of prayer beads used for counting mantras or affirmations during meditation. It helped them maintain focus and presence during their practices.
How to Use Mala Beads in Meditation:
- Choose Your Mantra: Begin by selecting a mantra, affirmation, or intention for your meditation. This could be a word or phrase that resonates with you.
Mantra: A mantra is a word, phrase, or sound that is repeated during meditation to help focus the mind and create a meditative state. A mantra can be as simple as the word ‘Calm’.
Affirmation: An affirmation is a positive statement or phrase that is repeated to challenge and overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts. Affirmations are typically in the present tense
(“I am …”) and are used to cultivate a more optimistic and empowered mindset.
Intention: An intention is a clear and specific goal or purpose that you set for your meditation practice. It can be a broader aim for your life or a specific focus for a particular meditation session. E.g.; “My intention is to be kind and compassionate toward myself, acknowledging my self-worth.”
- Get Comfortable: Find a quiet and comfortable place to sit. Hold your mala beads in your dominant hand, draped over your middle and index fingers.
- Begin Counting: Starting at the guru bead (the largest bead at the centre), recite your chosen mantra or affirmation. With each repetition, move to the next bead by gently sliding it with your thumb. Continue this process until you reach the guru bead again.
Benefits of Mala Beads in Meditation:
- Focus and Mindfulness: Using the beads helps maintain focus and prevents distraction during meditation.
- Deepening Intentions: Mala beads can deepen your connection to your chosen mantra or affirmation, reinforcing its meaning.
- Stress Reduction: The repetitive nature of bead counting has a calming effect, reducing stress and anxiety.
Why 108 beads?
Ancient astronomers discovered that the average distance between the Earth and the Moon, as well
as the Earth and the Sun, is approximately 108 times their respective diameters. This cosmic
connection adds to the sacredness of the number. (*further reasons can be found on google)
Remember: Mala beads can be customised with various crystals, each carrying unique energies.
Feel free to choose a mala that resonates with your intentions and enhances your meditation practice.
I have some displayed on the merchandise table at the Scouts Hall meditation class.
