Reiki is a form of alternative therapy that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. The word “Reiki” is derived from two Japanese words: “Rei,” which means universal or higher power, and “Ki,” which means life force energy. Thus, Reiki can be loosely translated as “universal life force energy.”
In Reiki practice, a practitioner channels this universal life force energy through their hands by placing them on or near the recipient’s body. This energy promotes healing and relaxation, restoring balance and harmony to the body, mind, and spirit.
The process typically involves the recipient lying down or sitting comfortably while the practitioner places their hands in specific positions on the body, often following a sequence of hand placements and the use of symbols. The practitioner acts as a conduit for the energy to flow to the recipient, with the intention of clearing energy blockages and supporting the body’s natural healing abilities.
Reiki is non-invasive and gentle, and it is often used as a complementary therapy alongside conventional medical treatments. It is important to note that Reiki should not be considered a substitute for medical care but rather as a supportive practice that can promote relaxation, stress reduction, and overall well-being.
Symbols play a significant role in Reiki practice. Reiki symbols are visual representations that hold specific meanings and are used by Reiki practitioners during healing sessions. These symbols enhance the flow and effectiveness of Reiki energy.
In the traditional Usui Reiki system, there are three main symbols:
- The Power Symbol (Cho Ku Rei): This symbol is used to amplify and focus the Reiki energy. It is often drawn or visualized by the practitioner at the beginning of a session to increase the power of the energy flow.
- The Mental/Emotional Symbol (Sei Hei Ki): This symbol is associated with mental and emotional healing. It is commonly used to address emotional issues, balance emotions, and promote mental clarity. Practitioners may draw or visualize this symbol while working on emotional healing or during meditation.
- The Distance Symbol (Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen): This symbol is used to send Reiki energy across time and space, allowing practitioners to send healing energy to individuals who are not physically present. It is often utilized for distant healing sessions, healing past traumas, or connecting with individuals who are far away.
These symbols are considered sacred in Reiki practice and are typically taught to Reiki practitioners during their training from a Reiki Master. The symbols are usually learned through an initiation or attunement process facilitated by a Reiki Master.
